•Hebrew Calendar: How It Works and Why It Matters
What Is the Hebrew Calendar?
The Hebrew calendar is a lunisolar system used for more than 3,000 years. Unlike the Gregorian calendar (solar, with 365 fixed days), the Hebrew calendar combines lunar and solar cycles: each month begins with the new moon (Rosh Chodesh) and lasts 29 or 30 days.
To keep alignment with the seasons, the Hebrew calendar adds an extra month (Adar II) in 7 out of every 19 years — the so-called Metonic cycle. This ensures that biblical feasts like Passover always take place in the spring.
The 12 Hebrew Months
The Hebrew year has 12 months (13 in leap years):
1. Nissan (March–April) — Month of redemption and Passover
2. Iyyar (April–May) — Month of healing and the counting of the Omer
3. Sivan (May–June) — Month of revelation and Shavuot
4. Tammuz (June–July) — Month of visual discernment
5. Av (July–August) — Month of listening and rebuilding
6. Elul (August–September) — Month of return and preparation
7. Tishrei (September–October) — Month of judgment and feasts
8. Cheshvan (October–November) — Month of silence and depth
9. Kislev (November–December) — Month of light and Hanukkah
10. Tevet (December–January) — Month of justice and transformation
11. Shevat (January–February) — Month of renewal and Tu BiShvat
12. Adar (February–March) — Month of joy and Purim
New Moon: The Beginning of Each Month
In the Hebrew calendar, the month begins with the appearance of the new moon — a moment called Rosh Chodesh (“head of the month”). In antiquity, witnesses reported the sighting of the new moon to the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem, which then officially declared the beginning of the month.
Today, the calendar is calculated mathematically, but the symbolism remains: every new moon represents a new beginning, an opportunity for spiritual renewal. Zeman's Biblical Map uses real astronomical data to identify the exact lunar phase at your birth.
Why Does the Hebrew Calendar Matter to You?
Knowing your Hebrew birth month goes far beyond historical curiosity. In biblical tradition, time is not neutral — each period carries specific spiritual qualities. The month in which you were born influences your natural tendencies, gifts, and growth areas.
Zeman's Biblical Map translates this into a practical profile: your tribe, stone, strengths, and a personalized action plan. Everything grounded in scripture and in the calendar that the people of Israel have used for millennia.
